About

The Passenger Hostel - Porto

The Passenger Hostel sits within the grand São Bento station, placing you in the heart of Porto’s historic centre. The building’s belle-époque architecture is a landmark in itself, with azulejo-tiled walls just outside your door. Inside, the hostel pairs this heritage with a contemporary, design-led fit-out – think polished concrete, warm wood, and loft-style beds in some dorms.

Beyond the looks, the hostel is wired for travellers: 24-hour reception, a bar and lounge, communal kitchens, lockers with electronic wristbands, and a roster of daily activities and Saturday events. With a 9.3 staff rating and a 9.6 cleanliness score, this is a spot where the practicalities get as much care as the aesthetics.

In brief

What works, what to weigh

+

Strengths

4 reasons to book
  • Unbeatable location inside São Bento station — You’re literally inside Porto’s most famous train station, with the azulejo-tiled lobby as your lobby. Trains, metro, and buses are on your doorstep, and the historic centre unfolds within a short walk.
  • Exceptional staff – rated 9.3 — Guests consistently praise the team for being friendly, helpful, and multilingual, whether it’s check-in advice or arranging day trips.
  • Spotless and well-kept – cleanliness 9.6 — The highest score across all categories. Rooms, shared bathrooms, and common areas come in for repeated praise for being new, clean, and well-equipped.
  • Social atmosphere with organised activities — Daily activities, happy hour, and Saturday events make it easy to meet fellow travellers, while the bar and lounge areas provide space to hang out.

Worth weighing

4 to weigh
  • Shared bathrooms for most rooms — Only the Family Room, Family Suite, and dorms have private showers; double, triple, and family rooms with shared bathroom mean you’ll be sharing facilities unless you opt for those with en-suite.
  • No on-site parking and no pets — There’s no parking listed, so if you arrive by car you’ll need to find public parking nearby. Pets are not allowed, which may rule this out for some travellers.
  • Potential noise from trains — Being inside a working station is brilliant for transport links, but it does mean you’ll hear trains throughout the day and night. Light sleepers may want earplugs.
  • Deposit required for key and towel — You’ll need to put down a small refundable deposit for the key card and towel, which is worth factoring into your arrival plans.

“Stayed here because it’s right next to the station. The place has been recently renovated and looks contemporary, with some beds up in lofts which was a nice touch. The lounge has a great view. The staff were lovely and really made the stay. Breakfast was good and the beds were genuinely comfy – the XL room especially. The door entry and lockers felt super secure.”
